Christmas Markets in Bruges 2026

There are many ways to get to Bruges, and it depends on where you're traveling from. If you're not too close to Belgium and need to take a plane like me, then you need to go to Brussels Airport, and from there, you have two options: either by train or by bus. It depends on your budget, and the journey takes about an hour. Otherwise, if you're traveling from Paris, London or maybe another nearby European city, you can easily take the train. One of the things I really love about Bruges at Christmas is that the hotels don't disappoint you. On the contrary, they are decorated so beautifully and make you feel even cozier at the best time of the year. Here are my top 3 recommendations:

Grand Hotel Casselbergh – It's the hotel I chose to stay at during my visit, and I really loved its historic charm, the beautifully decorated lobbies, the breakfast hall and the spa area, which became my favorite place to unwind after exploring the city.

Hotel Dukes' Palace – one of the most iconic hotels in Bruges, perfect if you're looking for a luxurious stay in the heart of the city, with elegant interiors, a beautiful garden, and a relaxing spa.

Hotel De Orangerie by CW Hotel Collection – A charming boutique hotel with romantic canal views, elegant interiors and a cozy atmosphere that feels especially magical during the Christmas season.

Of course, one of the most Christmassy things you can do in Bruges is visit one of its Christmas markets. But beyond the markets, if I had to pick my three favorite festive things to do in the city, these are the ones I wouldn't want to miss.

1. Warm up with Belgian hot chocolate at The Old Chocolate House

I can't think of a better way to take a little break from exploring Bruges' charming cobblestone streets than to cozy up with a cup of rich hot chocolate. We all know that cold weather and hot chocolate are already a match made in heaven, but everything tastes even better when it's Christmas time, and when that hot chocolate is made with Belgian chocolate!

At The Old Chocolate House, you don't simply order a hot chocolate — you get to make it yourself. Depending on the flavor you choose, you're served hot milk alongside a handmade chocolate cup filled with matching chocolates and toppings. You simply pour everything into the milk, stir, and watch it melt into your own Belgian hot chocolate.

2. Enjoy a fresh Belgian waffle

One of the things Bruges is most known for is Belgian waffles, and there are plenty of places to try them. You'll find some of the best waffles at House of Waffles, Chez Albert and Otto Waffle Atelier. Personally, I loved the waffles at Otto Waffle Atelier, as you can enjoy a healthier version that is gluten- and lactose-free, with canal views and boats passing by.

3. Take home the sweetest souvenir from Bruges

One of the best souvenirs you can bring home from Bruges is a box of authentic Belgian pralines. If you're looking for a traditional Belgian chocolaterie, you can visit Dumon, but my favorite by far was The Chocolate Line. I especially loved the Defender Praline, filled with hazelnut praline and popping candy, and the Gingerbread Praline, which felt especially festive and made it the perfect Christmas treat.

Even though Bruges is a small city, it is home to two Christmas markets, making this already charming destination feel even cozier during this special time of the year. Both markets are located in the heart of the historic city centre, but each has its own atmosphere and something different to offer.

The Christmas markets will be open from Friday, 20 November 2026, to Sunday, 3 January 2027.

Simon Stevinplein – artisan crafts and local treats

If you're looking for the smaller and more intimate Christmas market in Bruges, head to Simon Stevinplein. It's just a two-minute walk from The Old Chocolate House and right next to my favorite chocolaterie, The Chocolate Line.

Wander around the stalls showcasing handmade gifts and Christmas decorations, and you'll also find a good selection of food stalls offering festive treats and warm drinks.

Market Square (Markt) – festive stalls and Christmas trees

This is absolutely my favorite Christmas market in Bruges. It's the main and largest Christmas market in the city, and it takes place in Markt Square, surrounded by some of the most picturesque and photogenic historic buildings in Bruges. Here, you'll find festive wooden chalets selling everything from food and drinks to Christmas decorations, gifts and souvenirs, all creating a magical Christmas atmosphere.

The highlight, of course, is the iconic Belfry of Bruges rising above the Christmas market.

Just a short walk away, you'll also find Burg Square, where you can see the largest Christmas tree in Bruges. It's definitely worth a quick stop, especially if you're looking for a beautiful spot for Christmas photos.
