How to spend 1 day in Parga

Introduction

Parga is one of the most beautiful seaside towns in Greece, known for its colourful houses, crystal-clear beaches and the Venetian Castle overlooking the harbour. Although it's located on the mainland, it has an island-like atmosphere that makes it feel unlike anywhere else in Epirus.

I've visited Parga twice so far. The first time, I spent four days exploring the town at a relaxed pace, while my second visit was a day trip from Preveza. Both trips were completely different, but they confirmed one thing—Parga is still one of my favourite places in Greece.

If you only have one day to explore, this is the itinerary I'd recommend. It includes some of my favourite places for breakfast, sightseeing, swimming and dinner, along with a few tips I picked up during my visits.

Start Your Morning at Parga Harbour

Start your day at Parga Harbour, where you'll get one of the best views of the town. From here, you can see the colourful houses climbing the hillside, the Venetian Castle overlooking the bay and the boats gently bobbing in the water.

I'd recommend getting here shortly after sunrise if you're planning to take photos. The harbour is much quieter early in the morning, before the cafés open and the town begins to fill with visitors.

Have Breakfast at The Green Bakery

I'd recommend stopping at The Green Bakery before exploring the town. It's split into two separate spaces: one side is a traditional bakery where you can grab pastries, bread and coffee to go, while the other offers table service with a breakfast menu. Whether you're after something quick or want to sit down for breakfast, it's an easy first stop before wandering through Parga.

Wander Through the Streets of Parga

Before heading to the Venetian Castle, take some time to wander through Parga's colourful streets without a plan. Some of my favourite moments weren't at a specific landmark—they came from getting lost among the narrow alleyways, colourful houses, little shops and flowers spilling from the balconies.

If there's one piece of advice I'd give you, it's not to rush from one attraction to the next. Explore the side streets and enjoy the little details. That's where Parga really won me over.

Visit the Venetian Castle

Before leaving the old town, make your way up to the Venetian Castle. It's one of Parga's most recognisable landmarks and the best place to enjoy panoramic views over the colourful harbour and the Ionian Sea.

Take your time exploring the castle grounds and don't miss the different viewpoints along the walls. If you feel like taking a break, there's also a café inside where you can sit for a while before continuing your day.

Spend the Afternoon at Valtos Beach

Whether you feel like going for a swim, relaxing on the beach or enjoying a drink by the sea, Valtos Beach is the perfect place to spend a few hours after visiting the Venetian Castle. With its crystal-clear waters, it's a great way to cool off before heading back into town for dinner.

End the Day at Petros Restaurant

If you're looking for somewhere to have dinner, I'd recommend Petros Restaurant. I've eaten here several times during my visits to Parga, and it's one of the few places I always make time for whenever I'm back. The menu focuses on traditional Greek cuisine, with excellent meat dishes and plenty of local flavours.

1. How Do You Get to Parga?

The easiest way to get to Parga is by car, especially if you're planning to explore more of Epirus during your trip. If you're travelling from Athens, the drive takes around 4.5 hours, making Parga a great destination for a long weekend or a road trip.

If you're flying, the closest airport is Aktion National Airport near Preveza. From there, it's about a one-hour drive to Parga.

2. How Do You Get Around Parga?

The best way to explore Parga is on foot. Once you've parked your car, you'll be able to reach the town's main sights, restaurants and beaches by walking through its colourful streets.

One of my favourite things about Parga is that you don't really need a plan. Some of my favourite moments came from wandering through the narrow alleyways, discovering little shops and simply taking in the atmosphere.

3. Is Parking Easy in Parga?

Parking can be a little challenging during the summer months, especially in peak season. During both of my visits, I managed to find a parking space near the entrance to town, but I'd recommend arriving earlier in the day if you're visiting during the busiest months.

From there, it's an easy walk into the centre, making it a convenient place to leave your car while you explore Parga.

4. When Is the Best Time to Visit Parga?

If I were planning another trip to Parga, I'd choose May or September. The weather is warm, the town is less crowded than during the peak summer months, and it's the perfect time to enjoy both the beaches and the old town.

September is especially great if you're planning to swim, as the sea is still beautifully warm after the summer months.

5. Is One Day in Parga Enough?

Yes, if you're already staying nearby, one day is enough to see Parga's main highlights. During my second visit, I came on a day trip from Preveza and had plenty of time to explore the town, visit the castle, spend a few hours at Valtos Beach and enjoy dinner before heading back.

If I were planning another trip, though, I'd stay for at least four nights. Parga is a great base for exploring the area, with places like Paxos, Antipaxos and the Acheron River all close enough for day trips. Having a few extra days also means you can enjoy the town itself without feeling like you have to fit everything into a single day.

If you only have one day in Parga, you'll still have enough time to see what makes it so special. But if I could give you one piece of advice, it would be not to rush your visit. If you have the time, stay a few extra nights and use Parga as a base to explore the surrounding area.
