If you search for day trips from Osaka, you'll probably come across Katsuoji Temple and its thousands of daruma dolls. What I didn't expect was for it to become one of my favourite experiences in Japan.

Located in the hills north of Osaka, Katsuoji is a Buddhist temple best known for its daruma dolls, which are associated with perseverance, good luck, and achieving personal goals. Today, thousands of daruma can be found throughout the temple grounds, making it one of the most distinctive temples in Japan.

In this guide, I'll share what to expect from a visit to Katsuoji Temple, how to get there from Osaka, the unique stamp card experience, and a few practical tips I wish I had known before visiting.

How to Get to Katsuoji Temple from Osaka

Getting to Katsuoji Temple from Osaka is easier than it may seem and takes around one hour. To get there, take the train to Minoh-Kayano Station and then transfer to bus line 30, which goes directly to Katsuoji Temple. The bus stop is located just outside the station, making the journey straightforward once you arrive.

One thing I would recommend is carrying some cash, as you'll need to buy your bus ticket before boarding. I visited on a weekday and buses were running approximately every 10 minutes, making the connection very convenient. If you're visiting on a weekend or during a busy season, it's worth checking the latest timetable before you go.

This is also where you'll receive one of my favourite parts of the whole visit: a stamp card. As you explore the temple, you can collect stamps from numbered stations throughout the grounds, gradually revealing a complete illustration. It turns the visit into a bit of a treasure hunt and ended up being one of my favourite parts of the experience. Honestly, this card is the only souvenir you need from Osaka!

Exploring the Temple Grounds

No matter where you look, there always seems to be another daruma waiting to be discovered. You'll find them near the main temple buildings, along pathways, tucked into stone walls, and hidden in some of the most unexpected corners of the grounds. I honestly couldn't stop taking photos.

One area that quickly caught my attention was the display of giant daruma dolls. It's one of the temple's most popular photo spots and understandably so. Even after spending the morning photographing daruma around the grounds, I still found myself stopping here for more photos.

One thing I noticed during my visit is that very few people continued all the way to the highest parts of the temple grounds. By the time I reached the top, I was completely alone and had the views all to myself. If you have the time, I would definitely recommend continuing all the way up, as the views are beautiful and the atmosphere feels much more peaceful.

Useful Tips for Visiting Katsuoji Temple

Bring cash for transport, tickets, and small purchases.

3. When Is the Best Time to Visit Katsuoji?

I visited Katsuoji in spring, and the cherry blossoms made the experience even more memorable. Seeing the pink blossoms alongside the thousands of red daruma made the temple feel even more photogenic and gave some of my favourite photos from Japan.

Because of that, I would happily recommend visiting during cherry blossom season. I haven't visited in autumn, but with all the trees around the temple, I imagine the red and orange leaves would make the scenery just as impressive.
